COME and SING 2020

We are sorry that Come and Sing 2020 was cancelled.  We are hoping to arrange a Come and Sing event for 2022 and will post news here as soon as we have a date for you.  We have left the 2020 information on this page to give you an idea of what that event usually is!

We are excited to announce the line-up for our workshops in 2020!

Ever-grateful to those of you who come back year after year, we love to introduce new local musicians to you and so along with the talented Tim Nuttall - who comes back every year with the award-winning Chromatix - we welcome Dan Cooper, musical director of Love Soul, who is running a workshop in Contemporary singing and Steve and Leah Ross who will be sharing their expertise and years of experience with you in their Musical Theatre workshop.  We are also delighted to welcome Olivia Whelan who will be leading a masterclass.

Our Come and Sing events were started 6 years ago to give local singers the opportunity to come along and have a go at singing in a style that they might not ordinarily have the opportunity to do so.  Over the years we have run workshops in Choral, Barbershop, Gospel, Blues, Musical Theatre alongside skills sessions, masterclasses and individual tuition.

We always finish the day off with a concert in the evening - this year featuring Vivamente Voices, the Southern Union Chorus - both award-winning choirs along with some guest soloists.

What Would Have Been on in 2020?

Olivia studied at Chetham’s School of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal College of Music. She has won numerous international singing competitions and awards including winning the Dame Eva Turner Singing Competition, the Miriam Licette Award, the Elsie Turner Prize, 2nd Prize in the Frederic Cox Singing Competition and winning the prestigious Wingate Award.

She was selected as the UK representative to compete in the finals of both the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna and the Llangollen International Young Singer of the World Competition.

Olivia was also honoured to be awarded scholarships from the Peter Moores Foundation, the Countess of Munster Trust, the Ian Fleming Trust, the Sybil Tutton Trust, the Wingate Foundation, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal College of Music to assist her in her operatic training and development.

At our Come and Sing event Olivia is leading a masterclass. More information to follow........

Leah and Steve Ross will be running the Musical Theatre workshop this year so prepare for some musical fun!

Leah and Steve have been heavily involved in musical theatre for a number of years now, in fact they met at a local amateur dramatics society, and their daughter was born the weekend of a show in which Steve played the lead!

Over their years together, they have been involved in performing, directing and producing a number of productions including Oklahoma, Anything Goes, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and are currently directing St Michael's Middle School production of Mary Poppins to be performed at the Layard Theatre at the end of March this year.

They have worked with adults and children and are adept at bringing the best out of their performers, whilst trying to keep the process as much fun as possible. They hope you will join them in their musical theatre workshops at the “Come and Sing 2020” event this year where you will be working on a medley of songs from one of Leah’s favourite musicals!

Alongside his one-to-one singing lessons, Dan runs Love Soul Choir, a contemporary pop & soul choir who last year supported Take That at their stadium tour dates in Southampton. Love Soul Choir is 140 people strong and perform regularly at weddings, corporate events and theatre shows across the south coast.

With academies running in Southampton, Hedge End, Portsmouth & Winchester, Sound Pop Academy is all about providing budding young singers and opportunity to sing, dance & perform songs they love to hear on the radio. Super contemporary, high quality and really enjoyable for all involved.

At our Come and Sing event, Dan will be providing a contemporary workshop where he will be teaching a well known pop song, in harmony. Dan’s teaching approach is non-traditional and he will be exploring various ways of learning by ear for the participants. There may also be a little bit of movement thrown in!

Once again we are delighted to welcome back Tim Nuttall who will be running workshops in Barbershop.

Tim is the Musical Director of The Southern Union Chorus and Lead singer of the award winning Quartet, Chromatix.

He has been coached and taught by some of the best musical educators, vocal coaches and Choral Musical Directors both in the UK and US and as a result, has been able to procure work coaching choirs and smaller ensemble groups.

For Tim, "Music is one of, if not the greatest things in life and it is a joy to share this passion with others."

Tim will be leading our group warm up session at the beginning of the day and workshops in barbershop.  His workshops are extremely popular, leaving singers feeling up-lifted and inspired!
